LEGAL RESOURCES

LegalFish®
Net the right lawyer with LegalFish®. Find the right attorney in your city, state, or nationwide to handle your business or personal legal needs. Submit your legal request and qualified, pre-screened attorneys already interested in your issue respond. This is a free service. In addition, check out the LegalFish® Lifeline Funding Program if you need help with the expenses.

Prepaid Legal
Prepaid Legal pools the dues of all its 1.5 million members and retains select attorneys in each state. For family caregivers, it is a convenient way to draw up wills, living wills, power of attorneys and get a knowledgeable review of the contracts incumbent to arranging for long term residential care or live-in personal assistants or nurses. Since Prepaid Legal only retains one law firm in each state, using them to pursue a legal action may be more inconvenient and more expensive than using your local attoneys.

The Federal Site for Medicare Information

The Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services
The most practical site to search for information on Medicare or Medicaid

Social Security Disabilty
Note that over 70% of all social security disability claims are routinely denied the first time around and it can take months for a claim to be processed. Apply for Medicaid first as they will deny you because you were denied Social Security disability. But apply for your disability benefits as soon as your claim with Medicaid has been reviewed. If your disability claim is eventually approved, you will not be eligible for Medicare benefits until two years after your first claim was submitted. You may lose all your Medicaid in that interval. Do not delay.

The Guide to pursuing a Social Security Disability claim
Not a government site but a "must see" if you are filing a new claim or disputing one that has been denied.

SocialSecurityHome
A portal to social secuity disability attorneys. It offers a free claims evaluation and some good insider information.

business.gov

Provided by the National Library of medicine and the National Institute of Health, this site is a storehouse of information actually presented in a way the average person can understand. This is a site that leaves out nothing. It's like digging through your grandparents'attic. It offers chat rooms and message boards along with many, many other resources.

In Celebration of Bobby Morin
Ten years ago, Bobby Morin and his twin sister Tasha fell into the pond on their Grandparents' farm. They were 3 1/2 years old. Tasha drowned but Bobby survived. He came home from the hospital in a near vegetative state and the family was told not to expect too much. Bobby is now going on fourteen and still improving. Written between the lines of Bobby's story is the family's struggle to find the ways and means to manage his care and provide for his therapy. But, they aren't asking for anything. They just want to offer a little bit of hope to others.

squirreltales.com
This is one of those wonderful sites. If your child has cancer, this should be your favorite place.
(One reason this site can be hard to find, if you go to squirreltales.org you'll end up on a site for the care and feeding of baby squirrels)

Today's Caregiver Website
In 1995 Gary Barg and his mother founded Today's Caregiver Magazine and it's companion website caregiver.com. In 1998, they added the Fearless Caregiver Conferences to their list of achievements and Gary has written the book, The Fearless Caregiver: Getting the Best Care for Your Loved One and Still Having a Life of Your Own, available at Amazon.com.

Caregiver.com features inspiring articles, a relatively active set of conferences (message boards) and chat rooms.
